Considering that you use the "Start" button to shut down Microsoft Windows it is perhaps appropriate that this movie starts by showing the ending. This of course an artsy way of telling the story, but here I think they are telling us the movie is over and the audience should leave the theater, even though it hasn't started.
Johnny Dep plays Will Caster, a sort of Steve Job type guy working in the Artificial Intellegence field. A caster of course is another name for mage or practitioner of magic. A Terriorist group called RIFT tries desperately to prevent this movie from being made. A bullet transforms Dep from actor to radioactor. Of course he dies, but not before being uploaded to Facebook.
Here is another place they could have ended the movie. Nothing much of consequence happens afterwards. Caster doesn't take over missile silos or send out an army of robots, he uses nanotech to heal people. Of course his friends think Caster must be stopped. Just think of all the healthcare, drug company, liquor and tobacco industry stock that will go bust.
Does this movie actually transcend anything? About as much as a Saturday morning cartoon, I would say.
